Effie Trinket Makeup Tutorial – The Hunger Games – Halloween

I am so happy it’s October! I love this time of year and now that I’m finally living somewhere that gets a real Fall (read: not Florida) I couldn’t be more excited! I am already planning a trip to an apple orchard and pumpkin patch!

Effie Trinket MakeupLet’s get back to the point of this post, Effie Trinket! I had to do a Effie Trinket makeup tutorial this year. I am big fan of the Hunger Games series and I always thought Effie was such a unique character. I think they did a great job bringing her character to life in the first film and I can’t wait to see all her unique style when Catching Fire comes out in November.

When you really dissect it, Effie’s makeup is pretty simple, but it’s striking. To be the lashes are key in having this look come together. Paperself makes these incredible paper lashes, and are the exact pair Effie wears in the film. However, they are a little pricey for a one-time-use item, but don’t worry because there is a much more affordable pair on the market that are basically identical! Fantasy Makers by Wet n Wild have a pair of paper lashes in “Woodland Dreams” that are only $4.99 and exact match to.

To really bring the look together, you’re going to want to get a wig similar to what Effie wears. I found mine at Spirit Halloween for $19.99. To be fair though, even if you skip the wig, the makeup look is pretty and unique on it’s own with just the lashes. I finished off my version with a colorful blazer to complete the look.

Grungy/Smokey Drugstore Makeup Tutorial for Fall

drugstore makeup tutorial

I can’t believe that Fall is only three days away! Not to sound cliché, but where has this year gone? I  can’t complain though, because Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. I lived in Florida a long time and seasons other than Summer are pretty non-existent there. Now that I live in NYC I am already loving the chilly temps and can feel it in the air!

John and I are so excited to go to a real pumpkin patch, an apple orchard, give out candy to trick-or-treaters, and be snuggled up in our jackets. This is very different from sweating through our costumes in Florida and watching all our hard work on carving pumpkins turn to mold in two days.

Since Fall is clearly on my mind,  I wanted to do an affordable drugstore makeup tutorial using really pretty Fall colors. I also wanted to make the look really smokey and a little on the grungy side. I find these looks really beautiful for Fall and Winter. Not to mention that grunge is back on trend from what I’ve been seeing, but don’t quote me because I’m no fashionista! ;)

Quick ‘n Easy Morning Makeup Routine

easy morning makeup

Over the past few months I’ve had a lot requests for a tutorial on a simple morning makeup routine that doesn’t require too much time. I really wanted to meet this request, because it’s something that is pretty useful for almost anyone! You could be a mom, a student, or even just someone rushing out the door to work. I know I’m not the only one who likes to hit the snooze button until the last possible minute!

The other thing I wanted to do with this tutorial was use very affordable products. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t need my 5-minute-face to be full of Dior or MAC! I just want to look put together and awake!

As you’ll see at the end of the video in the side-by-side, this isn’t a full-on makeup look, but just enough to give you a fresh face and enhance your natural beauty. Plus, by using a face product with SPF you’re also protecting your skin throughout the day no matter what you’re getting up to!

Products I Used:

Supergoop! SPF 35 Daily Correct CC Cream

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer

Make Up For Ever HD Setting Powder (or use Rimmel Stay Matte)

Anastasia Brow Wiz

N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder Sunny

Maybelline Color Tattoo in Inked in Pink

Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette

Rimmel Scandal Eyes Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner in Nude

Maybelline The Rocket Mascara

NYX Butter Gloss in Creme Brule

I hope my morning makeup routine is helpful and that you can use it to help make your own personal morning routine a little better and more effective! Be sure to check out my brush cleaning video if you haven’t yet and let me know what your go-to items are for a quick morning makeup look!

3 Ways to Clean Your Makeup Brushes + Cleaning Your beautyblender

Over the past year I’ve had several requests to make a video on how to clean your makeup brushes. This important chore is often overlooked, which isn’t good because it’s very important to keep you brushes clean and sanitary. Aint’ nobody one got time for dirty makeup brushes!

Seriously though, our brushes collect oil, bacteria, and lots of other icky stuff, so we need to be sure we keep the clean so we don’t continue to rub all that gross stuff onto our eyes, faces, etc.

Method One: Deep Clean with Baby Shampoo

  1. Buy yourself some baby shampoo, yes, baby shampoo! It’s super gentle and won’t harm your brushes.
  2. Dampen your brush with lukewarm water and dip it in a little bit of the shampoo.
  3. Swirl your brush around in the palm of your hand to loosen up the makeup and get all the hairs nice and clean. Rinse.
  4. Use a paper towel to pat off any excess water from the brush.
  5. Reshape the brush hairs with your fingers so when they dry, they will dry in the correct shape.
  6. Lay your brush on an angle. You want the brush hairs on a downward angle so water does not get into the base/shaft of the brush.
  7. Let dry and voila – clean brushes!

Method Two: Deep Clean and Condition with Dish Soap and Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Grab some dish soap (I suggest using a natural one) and EVOO!

  1. In a dish, mix 2 parts soap to 1 part oil
  2. Just like the first method, dampen your brush with lukewarm water and swirl it in your mixture.

Method Three: Spot Clean with a Brush Cleanser

  1. Get yourself a paper towel and pour some of your brush cleanser onto it.
  2. Swirl your dirty brush around in the cleanser until it start to swirl and look clean.
  3. Most brush cleansers will dry very quickly, which is why many makeup artists use them between clients.

Cleaning Your beautyblender

  1. Get your beautyblender wet, just like you would before using it, but don’t squeeze all the water out.
  2. Swirl your beautyblender around in the cleanser and rinse. Repeat until clean.
  3. Note: I have found that over time my beautyblender will get stains depending on the products used, so it’s normal if it still looks a little dirty after cleaning.

I hope you’ve all found this post helpful and will put some brush cleaning on your to-do list! It always seems to be on mine. :)

What is your go-to method for brush cleaning?
